If you want to burn someone so badly you dismiss their entire identity, you call them “basic." It’s an insult leveled at someone unforgivably bland; whose interests are dictated entirely by what’s trendy or in mainstream fashion, and whose personality is no personality at all. Onscreen, we can spot the Basic Girl in movies and shows old and new, through her love of “trendy” fashion, brand-name items, or pop culture. Stories about this kind of character have long reinforced a common message: being The Basic Girl is bad. But is un-self-consciously enjoying mainstream interests really as terrible as pop culture has long made it out to be? Here’s our Take on why it’s time to embrace being basic -- if that’s who you really are.

  • Rare time when I don’t fully agree with The take. I get where they’re coming from and agree to extent but I think a “basic bitch” is (or at least what it should be) is focusing less on the “mainstream” and more on the shallowness of the person. They like “normal” things because it’s “cool” to not because they actually do. They don’t know themselves in depth so it’s fake, it’s shallow (but not necessarily vain) and most of all they’re *boring* because they are not being themselves, a true individual. Although Alexis likes basic things, I don’t find her boring at all even though she gains depth, her whole journey is her trying to discover herself. (Even before they lost the money hence all the crazy journeys) it just happens to be that she finds it poor. But you could call her basic for the shallow element. Eleanor May be basic for her likes but she KNOWS herself. She chooses to not have depth, she doesn’t want it and I believe she is genuinely herself when she is on earth. If anything she doesn’t give a fork when anyone thinks of her so why would she try and be “normal” or basic?

  • Quality video, but I gotta give a dislike for the misinterpretation of Emily in Paris. People don't hate the show because she's basic. We hate the show because it's racist, ignorant of other cultures, and just plain rude. Perhaps Emily has some basic interests, but she's not a character we can like because she just isn't a good character. She doesn't learn. She doesn't become a better person. She's just a conceited ass

  • Elle Woods was not basic, nor were the female protagonists 'who were into fashion'. Do you guys even know what a basic character is?? How on earth is the pretty, confident, popular character who clearly has a unique sense of style and personality, the basic character? Flawed and lack depth maybe, but that's not the same as being basic. Being basic means only liking, thinking, and doing things that are mainstream and not really adopting your own sense of style or take towards it. I don't think this was the take that you guys thought it was.

  • I just hate how Basic is something no one wants to be. I wish I was basic when I went to school because not being basic can ruin your entire school career. I was always too girly, too tall, too shy, too opionated, too weird (even though I don't know what that really means). I just could never really relate to the others, for ones I was too basic (those were the meanest, I'll tell you) and not basic enough for others. No one can be oneself, it is truly terrible, we only have two categories as it seems. If someone younger reads this, I can tell you, it will get better and don't let anyone tell you, you have the wrong personality because you like Frappuccinos or Heavy Metal or just because you are are calm such as I was, except if you are a real asshole, then you should probably change.

  • Emily in Paris can’t be used as a legitimate way to justify basicness because it was written as a solution to her artificial problems (which are very American fantasy if you ask any French person), and that could be told about a lot of this shows. In any case, basicness being a neutral characteristic of an individual seems more realistic than it being a strength.

    SeverinsenSeverinsenIl y a 17 jours
  • I think you redefined basic here, by looking at the parts of the definition separately. But it is only basic if all of the criteria are met. Like if you talk about a square by first discussing everything with four sides and then everything with sides of equal length, and coming to the conclusion, that squares are totally diverse, because there are trapezoids and same sided triangles. It is not JUST about liking some popular things, if it was, everyone who is not basic would be a hipster. I probably like tons of basic stuff, even though I can not name one of the top of my head. And that's the point: I like them, not because they are popular, I don't even know if they are, but because I enjoy them. (prof reading here, and I thought of one: I kind of enjoy the MCU, and have never even touched a comic book - that has to be epically mainstream) No self aware person will like NO popular thing at all. Neither will any self aware person like ALL popular things. It is the uncritical adherence to everything (or most things) popular, for the sole reason that it is popular, that makes one basic. That is why it is considered bad. But if you include self aware people with some mainstream tastes, than, yeah basic would not be so bad after all. But that's not what the word means. And the fact that your take is too broad here, is shown in the many examples in the video that are by no means basic, as other comments have pointed out already.

  • The offensiveness of the basic person is that their violate our finely tuned sense of individuality. A person who is perceived to lack individuality blends in with the crowd and lacks the sort of personality traits we use to distinguish one person from another. People seriously do not like that. Basic people are offensive to us precisely because all basic people are the same.

    Michael BertrandMichael BertrandIl y a 17 jours
    • Decide for yourself what you like and dislike. That's literally all you need to do. Forget all other considerations and try something then decide whether or not you like it based on whether or not you enjoyed it. Seriously. It's that easy. That's what edgy indie types like myself have been doing since grunge and it's why we end up being thought and fashion leaders. So go ahead and be basic..... as long as you are authentically basic!

  • Being conventional is not bad. Basicness is just a word to devalue a person. That person maybe is insecure or havent found what they likes or became arrogant. Every role is good. Being a conventional person is someone seeking connectivity. As we all are. We are all seeking love and connectivity in other ways. Some like to rebel, creat or appeal. It is all way to find identity. Let people be we all find a different way to explore and live our lives.

  • Emily in Paris truely isn't a good example of a good kind of "basic". Emily in Paris is a disgustingly ignorant and inaccurate portrayal of French people, how they view Americans and the city and the make up and culture of the people of Paris. It tokenizes LGBTQ, black and Asian characters and uses the only two POC characters to make racist jokes written by white men. When talking about her being basic, Emily's character is basic by being an ignorant, entitled white girl.

  • As much as this video tries hard to make it ok.... there is just no good "defense" of Basic, either male or female, even though it is the elemental need for stability in any society at any one "period" of time. Te ones who are "different" for different's sake become clowns. THAT becomes their basic, unoriginal "different"... "let me dress all in black, those guys or gals seem to not care, and parents hate it" "let me be nonchalant about EVERYTHING sort of cynical but not really, those people look smart..." I used to have an acquaintance in college that was always quiet and "distant" just listening and not talking, with a sort of attitude of above the shit we were doing or discussing, and EVERYONE thought this man was smart as heck because he SEEMED above it all, one day he gets drunk, and starts to talk and offer his insights and opinions... and it turns out we found out WHY he didn't talk, he was stupid and dumb as a fucking brick, and the resin he didn't all was that he didn't understand a dumb ting being discussed and his distance was that he tuned out because he didn't understand a damn thing!! Turns out he hadn't read a single FULL book his whole life, and his "basic" understanding of everything was a muddle school ironic or sarcastic level. He was "interesting" and "mysterious" to all the women there, until he actually opened his mouth. How's that for basic!! And now this chicks want to make it ok or cool to be one??

  • I don't think that "liking what's popular" is a definition doing the concept of basicness justice. Whenever we see it used it's about an unreflected conformity not a genuine like for popular things. The absolutely negative characteristics like entitlement, rudeness and prejudice we see in basic characters is not a mere association used to make us despise "basic" tastes, but a result of a characters self reflection and uncritical acceptance of the mainstream. While we have seen plenty of characters self aware of their basicness, their character development almost always includes passing judgement on their tastes. I also think that the "rebellion against mainstream is just as defined, thus basic, by mainstream as is embracing it" is oversimplified notion and falls victim to a false dilemma fallacy. The mainstream and not mainstream sets of likable things are not created equal. The not mainstream is much bigger than the mainstream. Liking the mainstream is way more specific than liking something else.
